Why retirement / lifestyle villages are a great option
One minute the house is packed with the kids and their friends…..the next the kids have gone and you’re rattling around in the family home.
Downsizing is a sensible and positive move for many reasons; it will free up some capital so you can do some of the things you’ve always dreamed of doing, and the chances are a smaller house will cost less to run. Plus, there won’t be the hassle of managing a large garden.
So why choose a lifestyle village when you can simply downsize to a smaller home and garden?
We can think of plenty of reasons; they aren’t called lifestyle villages for nothing!
Less maintenance
Maybe you enjoyed climbing ladders and doing the maintenance and repairs, but as we get older, it’s probably not wise to be running up and down ladders or carting heavy materials around. Cleaning and repairing gutters, outside paintwork – it’s all done for you. A lifestyle village frees you up so you don’t have to do the hard jobs and you can enjoy doing other things.
Many people find that the greatest reward of moving into a lifestyle village is the realisation that there isn’t as much work to do and they wish they did it years before.
Increased security
Lifestyle villages are safe and secure, with someone always on hand to assist in emergencies. If you love travel, or even if you’re just wanting to visit far flung friends and relatives, then a lifestyle village is definitely for you as you can take off and not worry about your house.
A genuine sense of community
Lifestyle villages generally attract like-minded people who share your interests. The social side of village life is often one of the main attractions for many villages; from bowls, tai chi, woodwork, art classes, choir and movie nights to bush walks, theme nights, theatre outings. Lifestyle villages have a massive range of activities to participate in, if you choose to.
Great facilities
Depending on the complex, there are many different styles of accommodation and on-site amenities such as indoor swimming pools, spas, gyms, a library, billiards table, entertainment room and restaurants, hairdressing salons and doctors’ surgeries. There are plenty of places to kick a football around, to play cricket or to feed ducks on the lake with the grandkids.
Want to know more about lifestyle villages and downsizing? We’ve created a great booklet to help you through the process. Called A chance to hit reset, this handy online resource explains what to look for in a retirement village, and the things you need to consider when selling your house.
For instance, when selling, it is important to make sure your home has the wow factor when it does hit the market. If it looks great and people get excited when they see it first time in the paper or on the Internet, this will reduce the amount of time that your property is on the market. You want people to walk in and fall in love with the home so your agent can start talking to them about whether it’s the right property for them.
