How to avoid a nightmare house move

How to avoid a nightmare house move

Moving house is potentially one life’s most stressful experiences. From packing up your entire life to navigating the logistics of a new home, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, and suddenly find you’re having a complete rush just before completion date trying to get everything done.

A house move doesn’t have to be a nightmare; with careful planning, it can actually be the start of an exciting new chapter in your life.

To avoid moving chaos, ideally you should start planning at least 6-8 weeks before your moving date – and to help, we’ve created a handy guide to moving house, which includes a checklist of what to do when.

You can get this checklist straight to your phone.

Simply text the word ‘move’ to 0488 884 520 and we will send you a link so you can download it and store it electronically – that way it won’t get lost in amongst the other paperwork!

As your moving date comes closer and you’ve crossed off items on the checklist, our guide will help your moving experience become more of a dream than and less of a nightmare.

Here are just some of the things you need to do and our guide will ensure you do them at the right time in the moving process:

Prepare for the move

A move gives you the perfect opportunity to declutter and simplify. Go through each room and decide what you really need. Sort items into three categories: keep, donate, or discard. As well as lightening your load, it will save you time and money when it comes to packing and moving.

Preparing for the move also includes preparing yourself; moving can be physically and emotionally demanding, so you want to be ready for it. It’s also helpful to create a supportive environment – if good friends offer help, accept it!

Notify important parties

Informing important parties of your address change is often overlooked until the last minute. Notify utility companies, your bank, your employer, and any subscriptions or services you use. And set up utilities at your new home before you arrive – after a day of packing and moving, the last thing you want to do is to arrive in a house with no power, and the kids will thank you for organising an internet connection.

Create a packing strategy

Packing everything up your home can be chaotic, and strategy can make it manageable. Our guide also includes packing tips and hints, such as how to pack fragile items and furniture, and to pack items by category or room, and label each box clearly with its contents and the room it belongs to; this will be invaluable when unpacking in your new home. Also, consider packing a separate ‘essentials’ box with items you’ll need immediately after the move, such as toiletries, clothing, and basic kitchen supplies.

Hire professional movers

While it might be tempting to save money and handle the move yourself, hiring professional movers can alleviate a lot of stress. Experienced movers can navigate the logistics, heavy lifting, and transportation, leaving you free to focus on settling into your new home. Research companies, read reviews, and get quotes from two or three companies to find one that fits your budget and needs.

Moving day

A plan can make all the difference. Make sure you know when the removal van is arriving and consider designating specific areas in your new home for boxes to streamline unpacking. No matter how well you plan, things can and do go wrong. Prepare for unexpected delays by having a backup plan for meals and accommodation if necessary.
